The nitrogen oxides releasing wound dressing is useful for the treatment of chronic infected wounds and non- healing wounds (diabetic foot, pressure ulcer, venous stasis wound etc). The dressing works by decreasing the infection, increasing the microvascularization and granulation thereby aiding wound healing. The dressing is also suitable for application which requires preparation of wound bed for acceptance of split skin graft based surgery. The dressing is poly-antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal) activity including antibiofilm and is capable of sustained release of the active ingredient over a long period of time. The dressing is simple in preparation, low in cost and it can be stored at ambient temperature and humidity for two years, without loss of activity.
An injury to the skin leads activation of a signaling cascade which produces nitric oxide as a signaling molecule, which in turn leads to angiogenesis proliferation and collagen deposition in the damaged wound area. Nitric oxide also plays a very crucial role in fighting the infection. Delay in healing process is essentially due to local infection (105 colony counts/ g of tissue), Trauma, Foreign bodies, Malnutrition, Diabetes, Medication, Immunodeficiency. Unfortunately people who suffer from diabetes, or those who are elderly often do not produce enough nitric oxide naturally which can lead to poor wound healing. The Nitrogen oxides (primarily contains Nitric oxide, NO) releasing wound dressing is useful for the treatment of such chronic wounds. The dressing shows excellent poly-antimicrobial (antibacterial and antifungal) activity, including antibiofilm activity and is capable of sustained release of the active ingredient over long period of time.
The dressing works on the antimicrobial properties of Nitrogen oxides (NOx; the main component being nitric oxide). The dressing promotes angiogenesis, which helps in the graft acceptance to the wound bed. The NOx(g) released is be able to penetrate through the exopolysaccharide matrix of the biofilms in the wounds causing infection. Nitric oxide additionally has wound healing property thereby, aiding faster wound closure.
The dressing also contains collagen, a protein that gives the skin its tensile strength and plays a key role in wound healing. It attracts cells such as fibroblasts and keratinocytes to the wound, encourages angiogenesis and re-epithelialization. In addition, collagen provides a natural scaffold or substrate for new tissue growth.
