Iron and its alloys are widely used in various engineering and infrastructural projects. Corrosion is the main problem faced by all these industries. Continuous measurement and control of critical water parameters such as levels of iron and copper, conserves energy and treatment chemicals and enhances the boiler life. Iron exists in this environment primarily in two valence states, divalent iron, Fe (II) and trivalent iron, Fe(III). Quantification of dissolved total iron (II+III) at 1-20 ppb levels specified for boiler coolant water indicates the levels of boiler tube corrosion. This kit is a simple, user-friendly and highly cost-effective for onsite determination of total iron that meets power plant specification criteria. The procedure is as simple as adding specified amounts of reagents to the water sample to be analyzed and identifying the intensity of color developed. The color develops almost instantaneously and determined by using Smartphone as a mobile detector in the range of 10-80 ppb and in laboratory using spectrophotometer in the range of 1-80 ppb.

Detection at such low levels even the sophisticated instrumentation such as ICP-QMS is not possible due to strong interference from Ar40O16+ on Fe56+ ion; therefore use of GFAAS or HR-ICP-MS is necessary, which increased time and cost of analysis.Hence, a quick, easy and affordable test kit has been developed for onsite determination of total iron that meets power plant specification criteria.
