Water quality problems exist nearly in all the parts of our country. Micro-biological contamination is a common problem in most of the parts. Specific regions have some predominant geogenic based contaminants like, iron in north eastern States and arsenic in the eastern part of the country. Considering limited infrastructure in rural areas, household level point-of-use (POU) water treatment methods are better alternative to community scale plant w.r.t. long term sustainability and maintenance.
\r\nBARC has developed a combo domestic water purifier device which is made of polysulfone based nanocomposite ultrafiltration membrane in cylindrical configuration. This configuration/device can be effective for removal of microbial contaminations, arsenic and iron without the need of any electricity and overhead water tank. The device is most suitable for rural and slum areas.

BARC has developed Dip N Drink Membrane Pouch technology to convert the biologically contaminated water into sterile solution for oral consumption. It works on the principle of osmosis and do not require external energy driven system. The pouch is sealed and stored in ready to use condition and can be used for providing sterile drinkable solution during disaster conditions like flood, cyclones, tsunami, earthquakes, etc. or Oral Rehydration Therapy in remote areas / villages.
Reverse osmosis (RO) is an efficient and increasingly common solution for providing safe drinking water from saline water sources. In particular, sea water desalination is fully mature and very common to make potable water by RO. Nowadays, two stage RO process has been adopted in many places worldwide for benefit of better product water quality and longer membrane life. Membrane is the key component of the desalination process. The thin film based composite polyamide membranes with high
\r\nsalt rejection for higher feed salinity like sea water are capable of removing more than 98% salinity from saline water with concentration up to 35000 ppm i. e. typical sea water salinity. The commercial size flat sheet membranes can also be made by using this technology.
Application : For removal of suspended particles and dissolved salts ( up to 2000 mg/l)
The developed technology demonstrates Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane assisted oxidation process for removal of iron from ground/surface water to make it safe for drinking purposes (below WHO limit of 0.3 ppm). UF filtered product water is free from biological and colloidal contaminants as well.

Multi Stage Flash (MSF), a thermal desalination technology based on flashing process, produces distilled quality water directly from seawater. In MSF process, pre-heated sea water is heated to a
\r\ntop brine temperature of about 90– 120 °C in a brine heater using low pressure steam and then flashed in successive stages maintained at decreasing levels of pressure. The vapour produced in each stages is condensed on the outside surface of the preheating condenser, thereby preheat the incoming feed seawater. Condensed vapour is recovered as pure water
Ultrafiltration (UF) refers to separation of species through membranes on size exclusion principle. Back-washable Spiral Ultrafiltration Membrane Element can be used for purification of water by removing suspended/colloidal matters and biological contaminants. Single unit capacity varies from 1000-7000 LPD depending upon element sizes. It is modular in nature and can be deployed in multiple units for enhanced capacities
Multi-Effect Desalination (MED) is a thermal desalination technology based on horizontal tube thin film evaporation process which produces distilled quality water directly from seawater/brackish water. MED technology along with Mechanical Vapour Compressor (MVC), known as MED-MVC, uses electrical energy for vapour recompression and reuse for desalination. BARC has successfully demonstrated this technology by setting up a skid mounted 50 cu.m/d MED -MVC plant at Trombay
Reverse osmosis (RO) is an efficient water purification technology for providing safe drinking water from saline and/or contaminated water. The technology provides a process for the preparation of thin film composite polyamide (TFCP) membranes and the procedure to assemble them in commercially usable spiral modules. These membranes are capable of providing safe drinking water by removing 90% salinity from brackish water
\r\nof TDS up to 5000ppm. Besides removal of salts, it also removes/reduces virtually all the contaminants from water like turbidity, heavy metals, fluoride, arsenic, halocarbons etc.
Low Temperature Evaporation (LTE) is a thermal desalination technology to produce distilled quality water directly from seawater using waste heat in the form of low grade steam/ hot water.
Development and deployment of ultrafiltration (UF) membrane in innovative forms for the purification of drinking water is the most important areas of membrane application with direct societal implications. Keeping various constraints of existing processes and field conditions in mind, BARC has developed the “point of use” membrane devices with typical features like: 1) Affordability,
\r\n2) Minimal maintenance, 3) Independent of the power source, 4) Minimal wastage of water (almost 100% recovery), 5) Quality.
